Brief Description

A walk from the village of Bolsterstone along the ridge, taking in views across the Ewden valley into the Peak District. The route passes through quite woodland before returning across farm land to Bolsterstone.

Start outside Saint Mary’s Church in Bolsterstone. With your back to the church head off to your right past the cottages and down Heads Lane (1).

Follow the lane all the way to the end at the farm gate.

Go through the gate and continue up the track onto Whitwell Moor.(2)

Continue through the gateway and up the field to the trig point on the top of the moor.

From the trig point continue along the ridge and into the woods.

Keep the lower edge of the woods in sight.

When the woods widens, follow parallel with the wall. In the bottom corner of the woods there is a stile which opens to a lane and a gate to a field.(3)

Go through the gate and follow the line of the wall, keeping the wall on your right until you reach the large stone stile.

Cross the stone stile and take the path to the right, keeping the wall to on your right. Follow the path until you reach the Mortimer Road.

Turn right on the road and go a short distance to the first right turn which is Wind Hill Lane.

Go down Wind Hill Lane and up the steep rise as far as the sharp right turn.

Instead of turning right go straight on through the gate or stile and down the field, keeping the wall on your left. (4)

Go all the way down the field until you reach the farm. Turn right and take the footpath away from the farm.

After 200m the wall turns slightly to the right. There is a stile at this point into a field. Cross the stile into the field. the path across the field can sometimes be difficult to identify.

The path follows the line of the short length of wall on your left as you enter the field. As you move across the field you will be able to see the stile and footpath sign across the field(5).

Turn right up the lane. After about 100m take the sign-posted path on the left. Cross the first field keeping the wall on your left. Cross the stile into the next field.

The exit from this field is in the far right corner, by the side of the cattle pens (6). The best route is to go straight across the field and then follow the wall up to the cattle pens. Cross the style onto Long Lane.

Go left down long Lane to the T junction. At the junction take Mucky Lane which is the unmade track on the right.

image Pass through the gate where Mucky Lane opens out onto the moor. Find a route up through what can be a boggy area. Keep an eye on the wall to the left. Cross the stone stile where the wall turns left up to the farm. (7)

Go up the field to the farm building, climbing the stile to the top of Heads Lane. Turn left and retrace your steps back to Bolsterstone.
