Brief Description

A steady climb from the up the side of the valley to the picturesque village of Bolsterstone. There are excellent view across to the peak district from the village. The Castle pub may be a welcome site on hot days. This walk passes through many of the green spaces in the town of Stocksbridge.

The starting point for this walk is on the opposite side of the Manchester Road from the Town Hall, adjacent to the Lidl car park. Take the cobbled path the goes straight up the hill.

After about 100m turn right onto a path which has a post Knoll Top. Follow this path through the woods until it emerges at the Edward Street. Go along Edward Street, crossing Victoria Street. Continue along Edward Street until it meets Hole House Lane.

Cross Hole House lane and take Coronation Street. At the end of Coronation Street the road ends at Bowden’s garage. The footpath goes up to the right of the garage.

At the end of the path cross Alpine Road and take the path into Pot House Woods. The main path keeps to the right of the woods, but there are many other routes through these popular woods.

The path passes a house and emerges onto the lane to the property. Follow the lane as it snakes up to Whitwell Lane. Turn right onto Whitwell Lane.

Keep on the lane as it passes between the farm buildings. Immediately after the buildings turn left, climbing a stone stile and entering the field. The path follows the line of the stone wall on the left.

The wall in the final field has been removed so keep crossing the fields in a straight line aiming for the stone style.

Cross the stile and take the short passage way down to Maple Grove. Follow maple grove until it meets Cedar Road. Turn right onto Cedar Road and follow it uphill to the junction with Hollin Busk Lane. Turn right onto Hollin Busk Lane and then left onto Stone Moor Road. The village of Bolsterstone is visible at the top of the road.

On entering Bolsterstone the return footpath is on the left, after the vicarage but before the Castle Inn.

The return footpath is an almost straight descent down to the Town Hall. Take the path opposite the Castle Inn picnic tables down across the fields. The path here is paved. There is an old turnstile at one of the field boundaries.

Cross Hollin Busk Lane taking the passage way into Princess Drive. The path goes down another passage way on the left and arrives at Coal Pit Lane. Cross the road and tale the paved path down to the right of the electrical sub station. After passing the Bracken Moor playing fields follow the pavement past the flats and cross Victoria Road.

Follow this increasingly steep paved and cobbled path back down to Manchester Road and the Town Hall.
